Ravenous swarms of leatherjackets eating everything in sight

A small, innocuous-looking fish called a chinaman leatherjacket is swarming in Sydney waters, attacking and eating anything that moves, from bare fishing hooks to large marlin.

From 10cm to about 40cm long, the yellow and black striped leatherjackets look nothing like the popular perception of a marine predator, having tiny beak-like mouths a few centimetres wide.

Recreational Fishing in Australia - 2010 and Beyond

The Dept of Agriculture, Fisheries & Forestry have been released a discussion paper regarding recreational fishing in Australia. This paper has been distributed by GFAA for Clubs to discuss & forward submissions by the end of April.
 
Please submit your responses to the KBFC executive by 26th April 2010 for collation and forwarding to GFAA.

Marine pest outbreak suspected at Twofold Bay, NSW

Didemnum vexillum (sea squirt) is an exotic aquatic pest which is easily spread, attaching onto infrastructure such as wharves, pilings and boat ramps, as well as ropes and boats. Movement controls aimed at containing the suspected infestation of this pest to the Twofold Bay area become effective from Midnight on 10 April 2010.

Pirtek Fishing Challenge

Once again, Pirtek are hosting Australia’s biggest national fishing competition. It is open to everyone – mums, dads, kids and grandparents!

 

Each year in Australia, close to 3,300 men die of prostate cancer and around 20,000 new cases are diagnosed in Australia every year. This is why Pirtek have partnered with the Prostate Cancer Foundation to increase awareness of prostate cancer in the community and also raise much needed funds.

 

Fight a fish to fight prostate cancer.

Senate Estimates Committee transcipt on Mako Shark Ban

 Today, Federal Coalition spokesman for Fisheries, Senator Richard Colbeck distributed a official transcript of the senate estimates committee on the Mako Shark Ban.

 

"There is still some way to go in resolving the mess created by the Federal Government and Environment Minister Peter Garrett relating to the fishing of mako sharks." Senator Richard Colbeck said.

NSW Man drowns in wild weather at Sydenham Inlet (Bemm River)

AN elderly NSW man has died after the boat he was in capsized in rough water off Victoria's east coast. Police have been told that four boats set out on Sydenham Inlet on yesterday, and when conditions turned they sought shelter at Storm Hut around Bemm River, near Orbost.

Man drowns in boating accident at McLoughlans Beach Bar
